Break Through School proudly commemorated 80 years since Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) with a week of themed learning and reflection. The week offered learners the opportunity to understand the impact of World War II on the local community in Belvedere, while also celebrating the resilience and sacrifices of those who contributed to peace across the world.
Curriculum activities were specially tailored with VE Day themes, culminating in a commemorative event on Thursday 8th May, where staff and learners enjoyed a ‘rationed’ wartime-style feast. The school was a sea of red, white, and blue, as everyone dressed to match the colours of the Union Jack, surrounded by decorations that paid tribute to the 1940s era.
Principal Ruth Elliott commented:
“It’s vital that our learners develop a strong understanding of our shared history. VE Day is an important opportunity to remember the bravery, sacrifice, and unity that shaped our future. Our learners engaged with real thoughtfulness and curiosity, and we’re proud to honour such a significant milestone together.”
This reflective and celebratory week forms part of Break Through’s commitment to holistic, values-led education, helping learners connect the past to the present with empathy and respect.
