Learners and staff at Break Through School in Belvedere, Kent, returned from the summer break with renewed energy and a shared commitment to making a positive impact on their community and environment. The term began with a whole-school focus on World Clean Up Day, setting the tone for a year dedicated to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Some learners took an active role in supporting the local community by helping to clear rubbish from the Belvedere Baptist Church grounds, demonstrating responsibility, teamwork, and genuine care for their surroundings. Others contributed by helping to tidy classrooms and shared spaces within the school, using mind-mapping and group discussions to explore how their actions support a cleaner, healthier environment.
Their hard work and community spirit were recognised with a heartfelt Thank You card from Belvedere Baptist Church members, expressing gratitude for the learners’ efforts and positive attitude.
Building on this momentum, the school’s next focus turned to recycling. Using visuals to aid understanding, learners explored how recycling protects the planet and took part in a lively quiz to test their knowledge in a fun, engaging way.
Sustainability themes have also been woven into the school’s new Friday Enrichment Series, with recent sessions centred around “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” Learners have particularly enjoyed reusing plastics to create models and artwork, bringing creativity and purpose together in meaningful, hands-on activities.
“It’s been wonderful to see our learners take such pride in their environment and community,” said Ruth Elliott, Principal of Break Through School. “These activities are not only about learning to care for the planet, but also about building teamwork, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Sustainability gives our learners a real-world purpose, something that extends far beyond the classroom.”
With the new school year now well underway, Break Through School is proud of the positive start and looks forward to continuing to embed sustainability into all aspects of school life and its wider community connections.
